As GCSE results day approaches, many young people across Derby are asking the same question: what happens next? For some, the traditional college route isn’t the right fit. That’s where the Derby Study Programme comes in.
WS Training welcomed prospective learners, parents, carers and referral partners to its Babington Lane centre for an open day on 30th July. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with strong interest from families exploring alternatives ahead of September.
Built for Learners Who Need Something Different
Chloe Barnett, Head of Education at WS Training, has seen first-hand how this model transforms young people’s confidence in other regions.
“We wanted to bring the same model that’s worked so well in Suffolk and Norfolk to Derby, because we know there’s real demand here for something different.”
The open day confirmed just how much appetite there is locally:
“We’ve had a really positive uptake today from parents, carers and external agencies as they feel there isn’t enough provision that offers an alternative to college in Derby.”
A Partnership Built to Support More Young People
WS Training has been awarded the contract to deliver the Derby Study Programme, based at the Workpays Derby centre on Babington Lane. As both organisations sit under the BrightPeak group, the partnership allows WS Training’s proven delivery model to be combined with Workpays’ strong local presence in Derby.Â
Chloe explained what this partnership means for local families:
“WS Training now comes under the BrightPeak group alongside Workpays.”
Lucy Townsend, Centre Manager at Workpays Derby, added that the collaboration strengthens what’s on offer locally:
“Workpays are very well-known around Derby for delivering alternative provision, so the fact that we can bring this to Derby is an excellent addition for young people.”
What Families Can Expect
Every learner joining the Derby Study Programme benefits from a genuinely personalised experience, designed around them rather than a one-size-fits-all classroom.
- Small class sizes of no more than 12 learners
- Fully funded places through the Department for Education
- Real-world work experience woven into the year
- Qualifications in vocational studies, English and Maths
- Support up to age 25 for learners with an EHCP
Hearing From the Young People It’s Designed For
Jaden, one of the young people who attended the open day, summed up why the programme appealed to him:
“I wasn’t sure college was right for me, so when I heard about this I wanted to come and see what it’s actually like.”
He was particularly drawn to the smaller, more supportive setting:
“I liked that it’s smaller groups. I think I’d get more out of that than a big college class.”
And he’s already excited about what’s ahead:
“It feels good knowing there’s another option if college isn’t for you.”

Results day can bring a mix of emotions: excitement, uncertainty, or a sense that things haven’t quite gone to plan. Whatever the outcome, there’s always a next step worth exploring.
