Prevent

What is safeguarding?

In simple terms, safeguarding is the action that organisations take to protect individuals from harm and neglect. Organisations, like ourselves, put policies and procedures in place to create an environment that keeps young people and adults at risk safe. The following are the actions we take here at WS Training to protect the well-being of our learners across Further Education, Apprenticeships and Commercial training:

Our ethos

At each of our sites, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. View our ethos towards safeguarding and prevent:

We recognise the moral and statutory responsibility placed on all staff to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children, young people, and adults at risk. We aim to provide a safe and welcoming environment, underpinned by a culture of openness where children, young people, and adults at risk feel secure. Where they are able to raise concerns and believe they are being listened to and that appropriate action will be taken to keep them safe.

The benefits of effective Safeguarding

Effective safeguarding enables learners to…

  • Confidently report any concerns
  • Focus on their learning effectively
  • Build strong relationships with their peers and supporting staff
  • Feel empowered and motivated to reach their full potential in a safe environment

What is prevent & radicalisation?

Prevent is a strategy to stop individuals from being drawn into terrorism and radicalisation. Radicalisation is the process where someone is influenced to adopt extreme political, social, or religious views, which can lead to harmful actions.

The Safeguarding Company

Safeguarding is a top priority and we use The Safeguarding Company platform to support this. Alongside My Voice, we use My Concern and My Confide, both of which are internal tools for staff to report concerns. My Concern addresses learner-related issues, while My Confide is for staff-related matters. We rely on all three safeguarding tools to ensure that concerns are time-stamped, treated as high priority, and handled with consistency and care.

Concerns you should report

Below are a few examples of concerns that would need reporting. If you have any other concerns, no matter how big or small they may appear, we encourage you to report them.

Apprenticeships Employer Safeguarding Handbook

Stop wasting time searching the internet for answers. Navigating safeguarding can be tricky. Between learning the terms, understanding what you need to do as an employer and implementing processes, it can be hard to know where to start. The Safeguarding Handbook will provide you with key details, including:

  • How you can keep your apprentices safe
  • Key safeguarding topics to be aware of
  • How to access information, advice and guidance, including reporting any concern

There is so much that you, as an employer, need to know to safeguard your apprentices effectively. Download our Employers Safeguarding Handbook to find everything you need to know in one place.

Student support

It is important to acknowledge that for learners who have concerns that are not related to safeguarding, each department has its own student support team.

FAQs for learners

For learners

Who is responsible for safeguarding at WS Training?

Everyone is responsible for safeguarding including tutors, staff, volunteers, and even you. It is important for us all to work together as a team.

How do I report a safeguarding concern?

If you are worried about someone’s safety, whether it be your own or the safety of someone else, reach out to someone you trust. You can report a concern through My Voice, or you can speak to your tutor or the student support team.

What happens after I report a safeguarding concern?

It can be daunting to report a concern; we will always try to be discreet. After you report a concern, the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), or another trusted adult will investigate it and decide what to do next. They might talk to other external professionals to make sure you or the person you are worried about is safe.

For employers

What are the signs of abuse and neglect?

Signs of abuse and neglect can include unexplained injuries, changes in behaviour, being very quiet or very aggressive, looking unclean or not being taken care of properly, and not attending work regularly. Refer to your Safeguarding Handbook for more information on abuse and neglect.

Who would I contact if I had a concern regarding our apprentices?

You would contact your apprentice’s key tutor, or the safeguarding team. You can find specific details in your Safeguarding Handbook.

How does WS Training ensure apprentices learn about key safeguarding subjects?

WS Training ensures apprentices learn key safeguarding subjects through our comprehensive PSHE curriculum, which covers abuse recognition, online safety, and maintaining a secure learning environment. Our tutors provide ongoing support to ensure apprentices grasp these critical topics effectively.
