Construction Skills – Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for site managers, agents, and persons who are, or are about to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling, and administering groups of staff. The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects that affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce. The SMSTS course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

Course Content

To help site managers to:

  • Manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management
  • Develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety, and welfare
  • Recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical, and productive

At the end of the period of training, delegates will be aware of, and able to implement or state:

  • All health, safety, welfare, and environmental legislation that affects them during their daily work
  • New guidance and industry best practice
  • Their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare, and the environment.

Assessment

The Site Manager Safety Training Scheme course is highly interactive and delivered using case studies, classroom discussions, group work, and individual/group presentations.

You will be required to undertake some homework/self-study outside of the course.

To successfully pass the course, delegates must:

  • Complete all four core exercises
  • Pass the trainer review and
  • Pass the end-of-course exam

The examination paper consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course and it is taken at the end of the course.

Each exam paper has:

18 multiple-choice questions (each worth one mark)
7 questions in multi-response or short written answer format (each worth two marks)

The exam pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32)

The exam lasts for 35 minutes and must be completed within this time under exam conditions. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction Site Safety – The Comprehensive Guide (GE700) publication and the Construction Site Management Delegate Workbook (XA6) for the last 15 minutes of the exam.

Duration 5 days, delegates are required to complete the full course to be eligible for certification.
