Course Overview

Next steps is a great pathway to experience the world of work and to obtain hands on training. This programme provides learners with the opportunity to upgrade their Functional Skills Mathematics and English along with learning digital skills. Learners gain dedicated time to explore work-related activities with allocated work experience placements enabling them to gain the skills and experience needed to secure employment.

Delivery Arrangements

The Next Steps programme will consist of a minimum of 3 days per week. The course will combine qualifications and other activities, which are tailored to the young persons’ prior attainment and career goals. All learners will undertake work-related activities throughout the course and have work experience with an employer at least 1 day a week. Learners who do not hold a Mathematics or English GCSE grade 4 or C will continue with these subjects as part of their study programme. Classroom sessions will consist of Employability, wider skills and PSHE.

Course Breakdown

Learners gain practical and real-life experiences, which kickstarts their preparation for the working world. This pathway also focuses on helping learners gain Functional Skills in Mathematics and English (if required), employability skills, digital skills and life skills. Next Steps not only helps to develop the transferrable skills and knowledge needed for further education or employment but can also help with improving confidence, self-esteem, and social skills. Functional Skills Maths and English will be offered to those who need to upskill in these areas.

Functional Skills will be delivered throughout with an assessment at the end of the course. Evidence of learning for the qualification is maintained through an online portfolio which is assessed throughout the course by the designated tutor.
