Safe Use of Harness

Intended Audience This Safety Harness Awareness training programme is designed for managers, supervisors or operatives who may be involved with the management or use of Harness Systems (Work Restraint, Work Position, Fall Arrest).

Course Aims This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for using safety harnesses, lanyards and associated PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and FPE (Fall Protection Equipment) in the workplace. Delegates will gain a comprehensive knowledge of work at height safety and safety harnesses covering both theoretical knowledge and practical instruction.

  • Safety, Legislation, Regulations and Best Practise
  • Hierarchy of Measures relating to working at height
  • Fall Prevention, Fall Restraint, Fall Protection & Fall Arrest
  • Risks associated with working with Safety Harnesses and working at height
  • Risks associated with working on/from various areas including fragile surfaces
  • Harness Types, Designs & Standards
  • Harness components parts
  • Pre-use Inspection and fitting of harness
  • Harness/lanyard storage, care & cleaning
  • Rescue Provision Requirements

The Delegate will:

  • Demonstrate an appropriate level of their understanding of the specific and other relevant legislation.
  • Summarise the relevant duties and responsibilities on persons involved in working at height in relation to:
  • Applying the avoidance hierarchy of control.
  • Competence and supervision.
  • Selection of appropriate methods and safe systems of work.
  • Protection of others who may be affected by the work activity.
  • Inspection of the workplaces and equipment.
  • Adopt appropriate safety arrangements as specified in the regulation schedules when using equipment such as, harnesses and fall arrest systems.
  • Demonstrates their ability to carry out pre-use equipment inspection, ensuring it is safe for use and use the equipment in a safe manner.
  • Summarise the requirements for: Planning and organising the work and provision of emergency arrangements. Care, maintenance, certification and record keeping of the equipment.

Course Assessment

Delegates are required to pass a test to complete this course. Successful delegates should leave with the ability to use the equipment in a safe and productive way.
